Menendez and Arslanian Indicted
Senator and Wife Face Bribery Charges
Robert Menendez of New Jersey and his wife Nadine Arslanian were indicted Friday on charges of bribery and corruption. The indictment alleges that Menendez used his position to secure business contracts for Arslanian in exchange for gifts and favors.
The charges stem from Arslanian's relationship with Salomon Melgen, a wealthy Florida eye doctor. Melgen is accused of providing Menendez with luxury vacations, campaign donations, and other gifts in exchange for Menendez's help with a Medicare billing dispute.
Menendez has denied the charges, calling them "baseless." Arslanian has also denied any wrongdoing.
The indictment is the culmination of a years-long investigation by the FBI and the Department of Justice. The trial is scheduled to begin in September.
