Padres Hold On To Beat Astros On Good All Around Night

Padres Hold On to Beat Astros on Good All-Around Night

Strong Offensive Outing and Stout Defense Lead Padres to Victory

The San Diego Padres defeated the Houston Astros 6-5 on Tuesday night at Petco Park. The Padres' offense was led by Manny Machado, who went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and an RBI single. Eric Hosmer also had a big night, going 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Nick Martinez was solid, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits over 5.2 innings. The bullpen did a great job of holding the lead, especially Taylor Rogers who got the final 4 outs for the save.

Good Pitching Propels Padres

Martinez was making his second start of the season and he looked sharp. The righty threw 118 pitches, 69 for strikes. He struck out three Astros and walked two. He also induced nine ground-ball outs, which was key to his success.

The bullpen was also impressive, allowing just two runs on five hits over 3.1 innings. Rogers was especially good, striking out two of the four batters he faced.

Balanced Hitting Attack

The Padres offense was clicking on all cylinders on Tuesday night. Every starter reached base at least once and seven different players had a hit. Machado was the star of the show, but he got plenty of help from his teammates.

Hosmer had a big night, driving in two runs. Trent Grisham and Jake Cronenworth each had two hits, while Brandon Drury and Luke Voit each had an RBI. This was a great example of a team win, with everyone contributing.

Final Thoughts

The Padres are now 16-12 on the season and they are in first place in the NL West. They have won four of their last five games and they are starting to look like a contender.

The Astros are now 14-14 and they are in third place in the AL West. They have lost two of their last three games and they are starting to fall behind in the division.
