West Virginia University to Honor Basketball Legend with Helmet Decal

Jerry West, the legendary Los Angeles Lakers player and executive, will be honored by his alma mater, West Virginia University, with a helmet decal during the 2023 football season.

The decal will feature West's silhouette and the number 44, which he wore during his playing days with the Mountaineers.

West, who is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, played for West Virginia from 1956 to 1960. He led the Mountaineers to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight in 1959 and was named a consensus All-American in 1960.

• West was drafted by the Lakers with the second overall pick in the 1960 NBA Draft.
• He played 14 seasons with the Lakers, helping the team win the NBA championship in 1972.
